Look at me, look at me, look at me; Mayor Darryn

Some people are getting quite fed up with the ego of the Mayor of Geelong, now he's put out a brochure full of himself and the first 100 days of being Mayor. The brashness is amazing and no wonder some councillors see this as self-promotion.

APPARENTLY a honeymoon period lasts exactly 100 days.
That’s what we learned yesterday when Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons faced his first barrage of public criticism from his own chamber.
Cr Lyons was lashed by a number of his own councillors for a council-funded brochure released to celebrate his milestone.
But this is about more than a brochure.
The document in question is a 32-page, A4 version of Darryn Lyons.
It is brightly coloured, brash, glossy, fun and full of ego.
Just like Darryn.
Criticisms of it are, in effect, criticisms of him.
Cr Lyons told the Geelong Advertiser this week that he wants to make sure “ego is not a dirty word in Geelong”.
He has even changed the logo of City Hall’s chief business arm to Enterprise Geelong Opportunity: EGO.
With more than 60 photos of his own head in it, the brochure goes a long way to delivering on his pledge.
It also features more than 60 ‘Actions’ achieved in his first 100 days as mayor.
Some are legitimate achievements, others barely qualify as ‘actions’.
On Page 23, Action 14 reads: “Along with the rest of Geelong, I heaved a huge sigh of relief when Shell announced they had a buyer for the Corio refinery”.
A number of the actions also feature the mayor claiming personal credit for programs or initiatives that were in train long before he was elected.
City Hall combated questions about the cost of the brochure to taxpayers by highlighting that only 20 copies had been printed at a cost of $290. That’s $14.50 per brochure.
But, clearly the council devoted many man hours to creating the brochure.
And that’s where the danger lies.
This is a council document, produced by council staff to promote one man.
By doing so it can be seen to reflect that man; his political and world views, his priorities and his prejudices. But that man is not the whole council.
