p.m. Instead of going to the library for
our Book Club we go to the cafe in James Street where they have spectacular
cakes for $8 a piece. There are six of us, a wake to remember our delightful
member Maria whose funeral some of us attended a few days ago. Last meeting a
month ago she was with us, animated, intelligent, sparkling with wit - but alas two weeks ago after surgery there
was a setback. Her body in now back in Portugal with kin. So we mainly buy
coffee and little Portuguese cakes – like French madeleines. We talk about the
book of the month – The Vegetarian – by a South Korean writer. Very dark, sad,
scary. It’s now a movie – art-house kind.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 36.0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">

walk a block (with a walking stick) to catch the Newcomb/Whittington bus –
haven’t used the buses for two months. It’s a run to catch it - the buses pull up about four at a time – for
less than a minute -and my BP is way up as I scurry. We pass the High School and the Shenton manse where we lived for nine years. No garden left. Cars parked in the front of the house where shrubs and grass used to grow.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

</span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Back
at home, the TV ‘Heartbeat’ is starting – small rural setting in England and
the lives of the police and others. I’m a sucker for this program at present.
And other English detective/forensic kind of programs.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 36.0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">

</span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Andrew
has made flatbread wraps with chicken and greens so that’s my late afternoon
snack. And one for his daughter who has arrived home from high school. I remember when our boys were young and they went to Geelong High they would bring friends over to the Shenton manse for a snack at lunch time and practically clean out the fridge.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 36.0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">

</span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">On
the computer I do half-an-hour of the church bulletin for next week – including
a contribution by one of the women and a prayer by St Francis of Assisi which
sounds quite contemporary for our modern world. There’s lots of comments that started with Margaret
Court’s letter re definition of marriage – that really got the possums out of
their hidey holes, their bushy tails shaking with anger. Plenty of bias and
prejudice on both sides of the argument.
Even in the local paper there are arguments about flying rainbow flags. I watch a video I posted on facebook of guinea pigs talking about Trump. Two of them look like Ginger Meggs and Ratu Vulavula.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

</span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Our
angel from Christ Church Anglican has dropped in with a box of vegetables and
all sorts of goodies. We are so blessed by these gifts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

is bacon and eggs and greens. I have now
a plan for six months which includes care with diet, twice a week at the heated
swimming pool, etc. And after the periscope examination in a couple of weeks,
then I can find out if I have a serious illness or not – to know why I have
anaemia and low iron stores, etc.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

I wish to thank the Attorney-General and Economy Minister, Aiyaz Saiyed-Khaiyum, for moving around the country trying to educate the people on the system of budget preparation. He is also inviting suggestions and ideas that could be incorporated in the next budget.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
While I appreciate the motives behind such campaigns, I am at a loss to understand why our A-G keeps on attacking The Fiji Times. I am a keen reader of newspapers and I closely follow the news section of radio stations and TV channels.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
I believe The Fiji Times has given enough coverage and publicity to his meetings. Whatever transpires in such meetings are reported by well trained and experienced reporters. In fact, I believe I have seen more of Honourable Sayed-Khaiyum's pictures in The Fiji Times than any other current politician, for which he should be really thankful.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
Some time ago in one of his meetings in Vanua Levu, I believe Hon. Sayed-Khaiyum even asked the people not to buy The Fiji Times, and now he is telling people not to believe what is reported in The Fiji Times. Such comments and actions I believe will do more damage for our A-G politically.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
Finally I strongly believe that The Fiji Times is still the "people's" newspaper.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
Look at the volume of its circulation and one can easily gauge its popularity. Whatever we read in this open column is entirely the views of the writers and the newspaper should never be blamed if it hurts any politician or a member of Parliament.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
I believe in true democracy and according to our Constitution we have the freedom of expression and therefore any politician should always be prepared to face a bit of criticism and also accept praise if offered for good work.</div>

Anyway I did some sketches near a rock and the others climbed up Flinders Peak and took some photos which I will sort out later. Then it was time to cook - BUT all the gas had gone out in the public barbecues near us! So we drove back to Geelong to Eastern Park and hoorah - there was a spare barb</span><span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; display: inline; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px;">ecue at the shelter up top of the hill. Salads, sausages, chops, hamburgers, eggs cooked heart shape in bread, etc. etc. Now we are enjoying mudcake and coffee. (Have to drink my coffee at least two hours after eating red meat for the iron to work!) So we had a mountain and the sea today for our fresh air outing. 16 degrees, sunny at first so it was okay. Also, I received some lovely flowers and chocolates - the latter to share of course.</span><br />

Plans for Point Henry. - article from Addie, map from Addie, my sketch, and a photo by Sandra J.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
TWO thousand residents would call Point Henry home, under a plan that forecasts water-based tourism, environmental conservation and industry for the new urban suburb.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
New hotels and resorts, major tourism attractions, a working pier, boating marinas and foreshore paths to Eastern Gardens and the Bellarine Rail Trail are encouraged under the 30-year vision.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
In a win for conservation and birdlife groups, the prominent wetlands and former saltworks precinct will be protected and backed by nature-based tourism and commercial facilities.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Released today by the State Government, the draft Moolap plan details the variety of uses allowed across four designated precincts across the sprawling 1200 hectares of coastal land.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said the area was almost three times the size of Fishermans Bend in Melbourne, which is currently Australia’s largest urban renewal project.</div>

She said the planned development of the Point Henry region, which has long been owned by Alcoa, would attract residents, tourists, recreation users and businesses.</div>

The present tenants such as the Geelong Rotary Club do a good job in organizing tours and other charitable groups use some of the building but the Geelong Council are now considering selling it. Should it be pulled down, turned into a peace garden, or what else could it be used for?<br />

The childhood friends, who describe themselves as “twin flames”, first began making artworks in the sand about five years ago after “reconnecting”.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; clear: none; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px 32px;">
“After we kind of reconnected ourselves, we started hearing a different language, and we heard nature speak to us,” Ondrei said.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; clear: none; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px 32px;">
“The only way we could express ourselves and return the language was through our love for one another and the love we have for nature … and this was our way of communicating back.</div>

<div class="intro" style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
MORE needs to be done to maintain and embrace Fiji Hindi as a part of the hybrid identity of Fijians of Indian descent.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
This is according to Auckland, New Zealand, resident Quishile Charan.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
The University of Auckland student, who has links to Fiji, was one of the participants during an academic conference in Saweni last month, which focused on the abolishment of the indentured system 100 years ago.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"For me, as a person who lost their mother tongue because of the move to a Western country and the resulting racism incurred, relearning Fijian Hindi as a young adult has been vital to my cultural heritage," she said.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"There is a notion of Fijian Hindi being a lesser or broken language and as a community, we need to embrace and maintain the unique language as it is a gift from our ancestors and pivotal to our hybrid identity."</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
According to Ms Charan, younger Fijians of Indian descent needed to understand how the language was brought about in order to appreciate it fully.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"One of the ways we can grow the passion for our language in the younger generations would be to help the next generation understand how our language was made, that it was formed in times of survival and played a key role in the formation of our current community.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"Fijian Hindi is not dormant in the past, it plays a key role to our cultural identity in contemporary times and it is specific to us as a people.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"To hegemonise a unique language to a dominant one would only harm us and our continual growth as Fijians of Indian descent.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"Fijian Hindi is a reflection of us, of our history, of our relationship to Viti and our ancestral roots in India. Erasing that is erasing parts of ourselves."</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
Similar sentiments were echoed by University of the South Pacific academic Professor Vijay Naidu, who said the descendants of indentured labourers who arrived in Fiji more than 100 years ago had undergone many changes.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
He said the most significant changes occurred in the areas of culture, language and social class.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"The indentured system basically demolished the caste system," Prof Naidu said.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"In Fiji, from the 1920s right through to the 1940s, there were talks of an Indian Government because there was a diverse group of people from India who had their own language and even culture and the obvious caste systems.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"But over time, the Fiji-Indian identity in particular became more significant."</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
Identity wise, Prof Naidu said the Indo-Fijian identity became more prominent during the post-indenture period.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"What developed was a more distinct Fiji-Indian or Indo-Fijian identity. The origin of the word Indo-Fijian was born in the 1950s.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"Being an Indian in Fiji separated you from the rest and the sense of being an Indian in Fiji became stronger when people moved overseas.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"A group of Indo-Fijians attended a university in India and they were called Fijians. That was a national-based identity.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"There was a loss of language especially to the more distinct ones like Tamil and Gujarati, south or north India but with a loss in language there is also a gain in language and we have now Fiji-Hindi."</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
He also added today's Fijians of Indian descent were more likely to be fluent in an iTaukei language or dialect depending on where they lived.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"Especially in areas like Vanua Levu. You have Indo-Fijians who go as far as speaking the dialect," Prof Naidu said.</div>
<div style="font-size: 0.75em; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1.1em; padding: 0px;">
"Likewise for the iTaukei. In the Ba Province and in Nadroga there are those who are very fluent in the Fiji-Hindi language."</div>

A hard day’s night – or Some Days are like Tuesday this week.<br />• After fasting for eight hours (and getting up and down for hot water bottle etc. for the lower back pain) I go to pathology for about seven blood tests (six-monthly sugar tests mainly) – 7.30 a.m. and it’s a quick process as few people there. My eldest son is my chauffeur for the day.<br />• 8.30 a.m. Hungry so we buy muffins and very creamy coffee at Hungry Jacks – drive through - and the lad serving forgets to g<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; font-family: inherit;">ive us the hash browns but we don’t go back.<br />• Feed the guinea pigs vegetables and tidy their playpen.<br />• Check world news, Fiji news, email and facebook.<br />• At 10 go to the Wintergarden Cafe to meet three writers, have cappuccino and lamington, and edit a hand-written diary about a trip to Fiji for a wedding, ready to type up.<br />• Lunch is fruit.<br />• Feed guinea pigs fresh grass from the front garden.<br />• At 1.40 go to the eye specialist for the six-monthly check up and results are quite good 98% and 97% for the peripheral vision test where you click on a gadget when you see stars. Still reading, playing music, and using computer without glasses. Talk with doc about the concert we’d been to recently.<br />3 p.m.Watch TV – two episodes of the police in the 60s English drama ‘Heartbeat’.<br />• Make a simple meal of eggs and kale.<br />• Look up on google the name of a new pill prescribed a couple of days ago by doc but not yet bought. Astonished to see it’s an opiate and can cause you to stop breathing and many other possible side-effects. I just won’t take doc’s orders over this one.<br />• At 6.30 go to the church for the Holy Week service and eight of us perform the ‘House in Bethany’ play I wrote a couple of weeks ago for the women’s meeting. Different actors this time and they used my dress-ups. Some Taize music, study of a psalm, one hymn, and the play goes well. About 18 people there so we just read the hymn text from Victor’s laptop.<br />• Feed guinea pigs last meal of the day, bed them down with their cardboard house and blankets.<br />• Coffee has run out so drink green tea.<br />• Watch ‘Midsummer Murders’ but give up early as rather tired.<br />• Sort-of sleep with a little bit of help from Panadol Osteo pills but still need Deep Heat and a hot-water bottle.</span></div>

But then another day I will just sit and sit – in the sunshine if possible, and write poems and stories.</div>

I'd picked up the vintage doll for $4 in an Op Shop thinking she might be valuable. I discovered a key, wound her up, and to a kind of bizarre mandolin music, she moved her head and shoulders. Lucky I'd taken a photo of her. However this leads me to a story about visiting a doll museum in a private house not far from Colac. Flo had collected ten thousand dolls and many looked like new-born babies so I wasn't cheered up at all by them. Well, some people are collectors of owls, spoons, etc. so this was a passion by one woman and tourist buses occasionally called in. Are you a collector? I wouldn't count music or books because they are 'necessary'.</span><br />

This photo was not by me but this is what people have seen this week from Victoria, and is similar to what I saw. Photos are from the Geelong Advertiser - from Airey's Inlet, Black Rock near Breamlea, Barwon Heads and Flinders.</span><br />

We met in East Geelong a few years ago. She came with her second daughter, Christine while Litea, Andrew and Kevin stayed in Fiji. Siteri established a good relationship with members of our local Unitng Church, had a reserved seat in the congregation and joined in our Fiji group. When a grand-daughter was born she ably helped with minding and later walking to school. I remember the baptism, barbecues at Eastern Beach, gatherings of dinner, kava and yarning with Fiji friends, her excellence in baking cakes and Fijian food, her lovely prayers from the heart. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>

A terrible bus accident in Fiji took her mother and many others and that trauma we will remember. Later, through a time of illness, Siteri was courageous, still smiling and she was assured that God was alongside in that journey. Eventually her body let her down and her time on earth came to an end. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>

schools and places I realize that there were times of failure as well as
positive interaction with teenage students.
Here are some of the memories of those times. I taught mainly art and
music, but in Fiji added Scripture, English, History which I energised by
writing plays, adding artwork and creative writing.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

music with a piano. Forty children to a
class was a handful but that was the norm then.
We had adequate material for painting, drawing, even pottery, the latter
not successful as we had an ordinary room and clay requires a specific type of
room to be able to keep clean and tidy and the school cleaner was not exactly
my friend. Work was done quickly, the
students producing many paintings on newsprint, too hurried now I realize.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

secondary schools, mainly at a Methodist school in Suva called Dudley High
School, When we lived in Rakiraki I taught part-time because of giving birth to
two little boys by then. I became an
English language teacher there and being the second language of the children
they struggled with Shakespeare and so on but we got along well. <o:p></o:p></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px;">Peceli was manager of a Methodist Primary School and we both taught Scripture there (unpaid of course) including participating in the celebrations when Fiji became independent in 1970.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">One year, living at Dilkusha when Peceli was part of a
team ministry in the Indo-Fijian community, I took the bus to Suva to teach at
Dudley – the whole school in stints of half an hour turnover – crazy as this
included tie-dying, batik, stencilling, all sorts of things, and Marist where I taught screen printing in
the science room, blunting their precious knives. We had some good excursions
those days, taking groups of teenagers down to the Museum or to a graphic art
designer’s studio.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

again became a part-time teacher and the Ratawa family helped by looking after
George, Robin and Andrew at home. One successful project was screen
printing at All Saints School in Labasa,
making our own printing ink with Dylon
dye mixed into the paste made from boiling cassava vegetables. Our students won all the major prizes in a
national art competition so I took a group down to Suva for the prize-giving. I
lost interest in teaching there though when a Hindu principal replaced the
missionary head of that Anglican school and he was very dismissive of the
Christian religion.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">When we migrated to Australia we first went to Swan Hill
and I got a short-term teaching appointment at Swan Hill Tech. Art work in schools by then had slowed down to
producing more careful, detailed, paced work, and I got stuck into lino-cuts
with the students with great equipment and good results. They were beaut students. I also taught a few students
to play the piano as they had a grand piano in the school.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">At Hopetoun my career as an art teacher plummeted as I
wasn’t given art, but craft, using a redundant metalwork room, still with the Bunsen
burners set into the benches. I decided that pottery was not on without a
better room and a kiln, so ended up attempting to teach crafts such as
metalwork and leatherwork, not very successfully. I wasn’t interested and
passionate about it. By then I was tired
of trying to do three jobs – as the wife of a clergyman, a home-maker with
three young children and as a teacher so I decided to stay at home, but of
course not long after I went back to study off-campus at Deakin University in
Geelong.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

than the task of being a teacher. The training college years at Prahran
Tech, RMIT, Fine Arts at Melbourne
University were three brilliant years, even going out to secondary schools
loaded up with teaching aids was fulfilling. Then at Bendigo I spent four
evenings a week at Bendigo Tech aiming to fulfil the requirements of Diploma of
Art majoring in pottery. Fellow-students were mainly younger or my age – I was
20 when I started there. It was a joyful
time.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Years later, Deakin University in Geelong offered study
off-campus so I started one subject called ‘Australian City’ when we lived in
Hopetoun. I was lucky to be able to change to on-campus when Peceli was appointed
to the East Geelong parish. We did not only
make very large drawings and painting but also photography, life drawing, and
so on – all at the old RSL Mill building at the bottom of Pakington Street. To fulfil
the requirements of the BA I took the bus out to Waurn Ponds campus to add
anthropology and ethnic music subjects which I continued to Masters level. l
loved research, the lectures in music, including a stint on Pacific music at
Monash, and then I collected songs in a few weeks fieldwork in Fiji for my thesis. There was no cost then
for study – only a small student fee. I was very fortunate to do the MA then. There were conferences also where I gave a few
small lectures and mixed with the elite of the world’s top ethnomusicologists.
Hmm. They mainly revamped their early research and were mainly disappointing.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Gordon TAFE in Geelong, some about IT, working with images on the computer,
professional writing and editing, some excellent creative writing classes. The
cost was minimal then, so different to the year 2017 for TAFE subjects. I wrote many poems, short stories, drafts of
novels, and edited about ten little books.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

untidiness of the home base, start writing without the network of fellow-students,
no longer catch the bus every second day. I miss the interaction with students of
various ages and the stimulation of hearing their stories, seeing their
artwork. So now it became just writing
on two blogs – Babasiga and Geelong Visual Diary, and also mostly daily updates
of trivia on facebook.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
Balyang Sanctuary is a lovely part of Geelong, part of the Barwon River environment and a good place for drawing. But here's a surprising story of a woman who lived in her car there and did drawings. The story ran in the Age newspaper and I've only copied part of the story.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Open Canvas puts disadvantaged artists in the frame</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Next to the swaying gums and green grass of Balyang Sanctuary on Geelong's Barwon River sits a 1973 HQ Kingswood.She's seen better years – orange paint p<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;">eeling, in need of a good mechanic – but somehow, she has made it through.This is Jacqui's home. She moved into her car after years spent running from abuse. It's also her studio.</span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
It takes Jacqui about a week to complete each of her intricate, breathtaking drawings, in fine ink pen, of street scenes and parkways. She used to sell these drawings by the side of the road for $10 – "just enough to keep my car going".</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
But on Tuesday her work will hang on the gallery walls of fortyfivedownstairs – a stone's throw away from where rough sleepers were recently moved on from Flinders Street Station – along with works from 18 other homeless and disadvantaged artists.The exhibition has been organised by Open Canvas, a new, Melbourne-based social enterprise that offers pathways for homeless and disadvantaged artists to sell their work.</div>

This morning our Retired Ministry Fellowship had an end-of-year function at East Geelong Uniting Church - about 25 of us, with small gifts for each one, ( I wrapped up necklaces, one from a Maldon op-shop!) morning tea, Advent hymns, a catered lunch (which I missed because of the book-club lunch) and an excellent devotion based on the Jesse Tree, beautifully organised by Margaret and Malcolm Campbell. This is a lovely group of mainly elderly men and women who have worked in ministry up to retirement and I have known most of them for many years. They are kindly people, interested in how I am going after Peceli's death last December. I didn't take the camera but this image gives you the idea of a Jesse tree which uses symbols to tell the story leading up to the Christmas Nativity.</div>

It's located in the grass section, no large stones, and a flat metal plaque will be placed there by Christmas. At the entrance via McKillop Street we are greeted by this lovely statue of an angel. I usually don't like statues like this nor all those stone carvings and blocks, but I think this one is nice.<br />

After sunshine came the wind and the rain. During our concert the lights flickered a few times and we thought they would actually go out, but of course the band could have played on! A huge pine tree came down in nearby Eastern Park yesterday,.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
BUILDINGS were damaged, trees felled and power lost at thousands of homes after strong winds whipped Geelong on Sunday.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
A pleasant sunny stretch gave way to wild wind gusts of more than 70kmh, as the temperature dropped from more than 24C into the mid-teens.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Buildings in Lara and Geelong West, including a Pakington St menswear business, sustained damage and trees came down across multiple suburbs.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
The State Emergency Service was called to a gum tree that fell on a home in Ocean Grove, while a roof began lifting off a shopping centre in Torquay.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
More than 4200 homes in Leopold, Moolap, Newcomb, Clifton Springs, East Geelong, Hamlyn Heights, Drysdale and Whittington lost power as the cold change swept through from 3pm.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Power to the 1447 affected homes in Leopold were restored within half an hour, but outages in other areas dragged on longer.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
About 80 Powercor customers were affected when a tree brought down powerlines in Quamby Av, Hamlyn Heights</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
A fallen pine tree also blocked Holt Rd in Geelong’s Eastern Park.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Geelong State Emergency Service duty officer David Brown said units had been called to half a dozen incidents but none had been severe.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Sunday’s wind also raised dust levels, with the Environment Protection Authority warning that poor air quality would potentially continue into Monday.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Strong winds are expected to continue across the Geelong and Surf Coast region today, with possible showers and hail.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">

At Fyansford the river is really running now at Buckley's Falls. And down near Lorne there have been land-slips onto the Great Ocean Road, and towns such as Birregurra are flooded.<br />

Neil’s involvement in tennis began in 1965, when he joined the<strong style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> Geelong District Churches Tennis Association</strong> Senior Competition Committee, where he remains today. He has spent a number of years in many different roles, including President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.1em; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Neil was a prominent figure in the re-forming of the Geelong East Uniting Tennis Club in 1977, with the club naming a pavilion in his honour in 2010. Unfortunately, the land the club occupied was sold, however Neil was a driving force in finding a new site for the club in Breakwater.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.1em; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In 1990, Neil became the Senior Competition Recorder of the Geelong District Churches Tennis Association, where he implemented an elaborate computer program that is still used today in all three of their competitions. He remains in this position today.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.1em; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Neil retired from playing tennis in 2012 due to injury, but remains as the Senior Secretary at Geelong East. Neil’s outstanding contribution to tennis in Geelong for over a half-century is why he is a worthy recipient of a Highly Commended Tennis Service Award.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.1em; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
We would also like to congratulate Nigel Wilson, Bernie Morris and Des Bath, who each received a Tennis Service Award. All three have devoted a huge amount of time and effort to tennis in the region for the Geelong District Churches Tennis Association.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.1em; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Perhaps we do need both to understand that life does have contrasts. A time to be planting.... and the reckoning when the bouganvillea is dying. How different and how sad. ;Yesterday my son started demolishing the almost dead bouganvillea in front of our house, one part had even rooted into the rooftop. Very prickly and tangled, but it was time.<br />
